Malta is a small island country in the Mediterranean Sea. Known for its history, culture, and picturesque views, Malta is a popular destination for tourists. If you’re planning a trip to Malta, here are the top five things you should definitely do:
- Visit the ancient city of Valletta: Valletta, the capital of Malta is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city was built by the Knights Hospitaller in the 16th century and is known for its baroque architecture, churches, and palaces. Visitors should take the opportunity to explore the city’s narrow streets, admire the intricate sculptures, and take in views from the Upper Barrakka Gardens.
- Take a boat trip to the Blue Lagoon: The Blue Lagoon is a picturesque bay located on the island of Comino. The clear blue waters and white sandy beaches make it a popular spot for snorkeling. Visitors can take a boat trip from Malta or Gozo to the Blue Lagoon and enjoy the stunning views and crystal clear waters. (Side Note: Make sure you choose a reputable boat operator. We didn’t check reviews and nearly paid for it with our lives. The whole experience was captured on video here.)
- Explore the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum: The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum is an underground prehistoric burial site that dates back to 4000 BC. It’s the only known prehistoric underground temple in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can explore the different levels of the hypogeum and learn about the ancient civilization that built it. It was discovered in 1902 when workers cutting cisterns for a new housing development broke through its roof.
- Visit the Megalithic Temples of Malta: Malta is home to some of the oldest freestanding structures in the world. These ancient temples were built between 3600 and 2500 BC and are some of the best preserved examples of prehistoric architecture. Visitors can explore the temples of Hagar Qim, Mnajdra, and Tarxien and learn about the ancient people that created them.
- Take a day trip to Gozo: Gozo is a small island located just a short boat ride from Malta and is known for its beautiful beaches, picturesque countryside, and ancient temples. It’s the perfect place for a day trip. Gozo was once the home of the world famous Azure Window which unfortunately collapsed in 2017. See my post here for more information.
This is just a short list of the many things to do in Malta. Whether you’re interested in history, culture, or just chilling at the beach, Malta has something to offer everyone.

One of Malta’s many ancient megalithic temples. It’s amazing they were able to accomplish such feats so long ago.
